Autism Awareness

April 2, 2009

Today is World Autism Awareness Day.

It would be awesome if everyone took some time today to learn about Autism, what it means to have an Autism Spectrum Disorder and what it means for parents to have diagnosed children. If you take the time to read this blog everyday (and surprisingly a lot of you do!) then you probably have time to read about Autism instead.

Autism is a lot of things. Likewise, there are a lot of things that it isn’t. Don’t be discouraged by scary stories and or what you think it might be. Learn about it. There is no way you will make it through life without knowing someone whose life is shaped by Autism in one capacity or another. If you understand even the first thing about Autism, someone will appreciate it. If you withhold that “shut your kid up” look when someone’s 10-year-old is having a melt down in public. Or if you don’t look completely terrified when a friend say’s her child or grandchild may have an Autism disordered, it will be worth whatever time you take today to learn.

Start here:

Autism Society of America

Autism Speaks

And big props to all the awesome people in my life who have the nerve and patience to work with families effected by Autism. Zac, Lys, Mark, Shelsey…I’m sure I’m forgetting someone…you guys rock.
