Claire rocks her dress

June 2, 2010

This is my friend Claire. She’s a knock out.

She married her bestest friend Jeff in January 2009, it was an awesome wedding on an awesomely cold day. Right around the time of the wedding Claire and I agreed we’d have to get together in the Spring time for a fun little ‘rock the dress’ photo session. That way she could wear her dress again and have some fun, summery photos to pair with her formal winter ones. She likes to dress up. I like to take photos. We’re a good pair, Claire and I.

So it took longer than we expected but eventually we pulled it all together and a few weekends back we had our little photo session! We’d spent the weekend camping, which I believe makes Claire the first ‘bride’ to ever bathe under a water pump in the middle of a campground before putting on her dress! But we looked past that and braved the crazy heat and humidity and set out into the mid-day sun for some photo fun.

She’s the only person on earth who looks this beautiful after living outdoors for an entire weekend.

All of these photos were taken in and around the little river town of Grafton – which is Zac and I’s  (and Claire and Jeff’s) favorite place ever. It’s hardly a map dot but its chuck full of wineries, perfectly unusual pubs and river views.

Let me tell you, Claire got her fair share of whistles, honked horns and whoo hoos during this whole processes since most of the shoot was conducted along the road side. But no pose and no location drew more attention than this one:

Ha! The open field was on the lower, south side of the highway. So I sent Claire down to the field and told her to run like the wind. I stayed up on the higher ground, on the north side of the highway. It didn’t occur to me how strange this looked until people started driving off the road! To them, the photographer and her giant lens were invisible. All they saw was a bride, running full speed through a massive open field of thistle.

That was the last frame I captured before Claire face planted into the field. She’s a good sport.

She was workin’ it!! Love the attitude. That is the biggest photo-related tip I can offer any bride. If you want amazing photos, you’ve got to work it. No nonsense about feeling silly or looking stupid. I know you watch America’s Next Top Model. Or at the least you’ve read Vogue. Work it. If you end up looking ridiculous, your photographer will delete the photo and you’ll never know. But more likely than not, you’ll look like a rock star.

See! A rock star!

Want another tip for looking amazing in your wedding photos?

Laugh. It’s the ‘you’ everyone will recognize.

This next one is my favorite : )

I think she rocked her dress right good, don’t you?

What a fun deal! I still haven’t decided which of my actual wedding photos to frame yet but when I do, I think it will be time to put my own dress back on and rock it! That, or I’ll just plan some sort of wear-your-wedding-dress backyard bbq. Any excuse to wear my dress really. So I say rather than wrap that beautiful white dress in a million layers of plastic and store in a basement somewhere, keep it where you can see in. Wait a few weeks, a few months, wait a year. Then pack it up, take it somewhere really cool and rock it : )
