Live from Ireland: FAIL

September 13, 2011

Well, this is embarassing. Talk about not showing up to your own party, huh?

I promoted this Live from Ireland blog business like it was my job man. I shared links with folks where I work, I posted about it on Facebook, I shared the link with people on travel blogs we used in our planning. Everyone and the Queen was pumped and ready to follow our Live from Ireland blog.

Biggest fail in the history of blogs my friends.

I had assumed there would be a day or two during our trip when the internet connection might not serve me well. On those days, I figured I’d just post a few quick paragraphs about what we’d done and catch up on posting pictures when the connection was stronger.

On day 1, all went as planned. We had a nice connection, but limited time and a serious case of jetlag, so we got up a short post and a few pictures.

On day 2, we were waiting for a ferry to cross a river and there was a wi-fi connection. I busted out the laptop, typed up a lovely, witty, entertaining blog post and added a few pictures. As the last picture loaded, we boarded the ferry and lost the connection before I could hit the publish button.

Little did I know this would be my last reliable bit of internet access.

When we arrived at our destination that evening, I tried to finish uploading pictures. No go. Connection was painfully slow and no matter what I tried it wasn’t happening. And then I looked around and realized I was that girl. There were guests from all over the world sharing tea in the most amazing living room you’ve ever seen, chatting over their plans for the evening and coming days and I was hiding in a corner, hunched over my laptop mumbling things about mother f’ing IP addresses.

So I axed that right then and there. One does not go to Ireland to sit in a corner and battle the evils of internet connectivity.

I agreed to shelve the blog and try again the next day.

Next day, no luck.

Day after that, nada.

Next location, new B&B, new connection. No go.

And so it went, for 9 days and 9 nights. I think its a modern day parable with some sort of lesson, but I haven’t figured it out yet.

I felt bad. Like I was betraying my loyal blog readers.

I’d call home and my mom would say, “People are really sad there haven’t been blog posts…”

But I didn’t feel too bad, cus I was IN IRELAND BABY!! And we were having the time of our lives and wearing ourselves out to the point of complete and utter exhaustion each day until my vocabularly had reduced to the only two important words in Ireland which are “Pint” and “Guinness.” So really, my blogs would have been quite borining anyway.

But we’re back home now. Slowly recovering from the jet lag and basking in American amenities like flat land and two lane roads.

We’ve had one hell of an adventure. We’ve explored coast lines and mountain ranges and farm fields. We’ve consumed amazing amounts of seafood, stew and alcohol. Oh, the alcohol. We’ve taken 2,739 photos. We’ve fallen head over heals in love with 24 different Irishmen. Oh wait. That was just me. We’ve been kissed by drunken Spainards. Oh wait. That was just Zac. We’ve explored abbeys and friaries and priories and we still don’t know the difference between them. We’ve seen castles and forts and medievil structures. And we haven’t blogged a damn word about it.

So that’s what we’ll do now. Live from Ireland has officially been renamed Prerecorded in Ireland!

I’ll aim to get one day of the trip posted each day, but bear in mind that I have nearly 3,000 photos to sort and select from. Oh and apparently I have 2 jobs or something? Though I can’t remember what either or them are…

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to stuff my face with Mexican food because I couldn’t find any of it in Ireland. Then I’m going to fill the my flask with whiskey and tuck in my pocket in case I start having withdrawl symptoms from the sudden lack of alcohol.

A million and one thank yous to all the people who checked this blog every day even though they had found nothing the day before. When I logged in today and saw how many hits we had gotten each day, I almost cried. Sometimes blog hits give me a false sense of popularity : )  So thanks for checking in, I hope you’ll continue to do so in the coming days because I promise you, there will be stories read!

Slainte!

(That means “good health” in Ireland. Kind of like “cheers.” It’s one of maybe 6 Irish words we were able to learn…and two of the others mean “Slow down.” So yeah…not so much on learning the local language…)
