The trials of building a wedding in two cities and hosting it in a third.

March 23, 2009

Having a getaway wedding is a great idea. For many reasons, we are very happy with our decision to have our wedding in Galena.

Living in St. Louis, storing my wedding goods in Streator, and planning a wedding in Galena, however, has offered up some interesting challenges. Challenges that could have been avoided, perhaps, if I weren’t so hell bent on doing everything myself. I am hellbent on that though so really the point is moot. (Or Moo, like a Cow’s opinion, if you love Friends as much as I do.)

Anywho. We are making, fashioning and crafting nearly every aspect of this wedding by hand with the exceptions of my dress and the church. I love that. It provides hours of crafting fun and it makes the whole event feel a lot more personal. It also means that we will be hauling every aspect of the wedding from St. Louis/Streator to Galena. Cute.

In the coming weeks I will be purchasing a lifetime supply of rubbermaid totes in which we will store and transport our wedding treasures. Should you forsee yourself moving in the months following our wedding, please let us know. We will be happy to provide you with all the rubbermaid totes you need to move an entire warehouse from one coast to the other. We are considering launching a rubbermaid tote rental company.

So all of these totes are fine and good. Until you combine them with a wedding dress, a MOB dress, personal luggage, 4 giant mums and assorted people. Then it becomes a challenge because, well, that’s a lot of crap to fit into two suvs, one minivan and a sedan (the current Galena Trail Caravan).

And so, it looks like this beast is being added to being added to the Galena Trail Caravan lineup:

Isn’t it cute?

That’s right. We’ll be rollin up to ourĀ  wedding not in a limo. Oh no. Not in a horse and carriage. Hell no, no cargo room in a carriage. We’ll be rolling up in a cargo van. I’m calling it the Wedding Van. At least its white.

Maggie and Zac: All Class, All The Time.

Whatever. Add this to the list of things people don’t mention about destination and diy weddings.

Really, it’s a relief that this is necessary. Everyone has their pet peeves. Mine? Driving long distances in vehicles that are packed to the brim. It makes me a nervous wreck. It is a result of too many trips home from college with my backseat crammed full of two months worth of laundry. So if we pack up the Wedding Van and our SUV contains nothing but us and one fabulous wedding dress I will be one happy destination bride. (What? You didn’t think I was going to drive that thing did you?? That’s Father of the Bride territory.)

And you better believe there will be cans tied to the bumper.
