Tips for Seniors – Edwardsville Senior Photos

July 10, 2012

The summer (a very hot summer…) is moving fast! We’re now booking Senior Photo Sessions in Edwardsville, Alton and O’Fallon as well as the surrounding areas. Space is limited so now is the time to get your session booked while still allowing plenty of time for numerous trips to the mall, a bazillion make up trials and likely a trip to the salon so that you can perfect your senior look. It’s a look that will, thanks to your amazing senior photos, live in photographic infamy. So it’s worth perfecting.

If you happen to be an Edwardsville or Glen Carbon area Senior you might want to check out www.edglenfamilies.org and you might want to sign up for their monthly coupon email blast. You just might want to. Maybe. Just sayin…

In preparation for senior photo season I thought I would put together a brief (ya right, like I’m ever brief)! list of tips…so here we go…

Don’t listen to your mom when she tells you your outfit is too trendy and will look dated in a few years. Of course it will look dated. If senior photos didn’t date you, they’d be useless. Put together looks that capture exactly this time in your life – what you love now, what you look like now. Don’t worry about your future children laughing at your hair style – it can’t be avoided.

Now is not the time to look sexy. It just isn’t. So don’t try. Go for trendy, classy, funky, fun, vibrant, country – whatever you like – but don’t aspire to be a Victoria’s Secret model. You may be smokin’ hot, but that’s not what your grandma is looking to frame for her mantel.

Easy on the make up. Practice your make up before your session. You might even snap a picture of yourself and see how it looks in a photo. Dark eye make up will look extra dark in photos and can often lead to the appearance of very small or non-visible eyes. Play up your eyes, but select subtle shades and go easy on the liner. You want to look like your day-to-day self, just a bit more polished and snazzy. Don’t forget to gloss up your lips!

Avoid tan lines. Also avoid over-tanning. Over-tan equals orange in photos. Say no to orange.

Consider pulling your hair into a simple pony tail or half up/half down look towards the end of your session for more variety. Just plan to doing so quickly.

Aim for variety in your outfit choices – something more stylish and edgy, something casual but still chic – think of all the different sides to your personality and try to capture a few in your outfits.

Have your outfits and coordinating shoes/jewelery/accessories organized ahead of time. You want to change as quickly as possible so that you get as much camera time as possible.

Don’t forget the details! Shoes, belts, hats, jewelry, scarves – it all goes a long way so think head-to-toe! Nothing makes you looks snazzier than high heels! Flats can be super cute too, but avoid standard-issue plastic flip flips. They just don’t look nice in photos.

Practice your faces in the mirror. Try different degrees of smiling, a serious face, a “laughing” look so that when I call out things like “Give me a serious look!” or “Okay, now just a little smile!” You’ll know what to do and you’ll know exactly how you look, avoiding the haunting “Do I look stupid?!” question.

Pick colors that pop! Solid fabrics are always the most flattering.

Don’t forget about what goes under those awesome outfits. Be sure no lines or colors are showing through!

Bring yo mama with you. Or your bff.  Bring whoever is going to keep an eye on your hair or tell you to loosen up if you’re feeling shy. Bring someone who will make you giggle and help you have fun! Do not bring anyone who is going to do anything remotely close to making you feel less confident or less than 100 percent ridiculously awesome.

And my final tip, of course, is to book The Fabulous Senior Photo Package to be sure you get not only the hottest senior photos around, but the hottest photo products to match! See here to view images of the albums and frames!

Senior photo sessions, prints and products are also available a la carte. Session price is $150. Contact us via the blog submission form or via our website for details and to arrange your senior photo session today.
